Intro to Wheel Throwing | Thu, 6-8 PM
Thursday, 12/10 or 12/17 | 6:00–8:00 PM (2 hours)
Instructor: Kayla Rich
Spend an evening at the pottery wheel and find out what it feels like to turn a lump of clay into something you made yourself! Intro to Wheel Throwing is a hands-on class for first-timers who have always wanted to try the wheel, and for anyone ready for a fun, creative night out.
You'll start with a demonstration, then sit down at your own wheel. Step by step, you'll learn how to center your clay, open it up and pull up the walls to shape a cup or bowl. Expect a little mess and a lot of laughs. Every wobble is part of the process!
Throughout the class, you'll get one-on-one guidance and tips to help you feel comfortable at the wheel. Once your pieces take shape, you'll learn simple ways to finish and personalize them before they head to the kiln.
After class, our staff will handle all of the trimming, glazing and kiln firing, so all you have to do is come back to pick up your finished pottery in about 3 weeks (we’ll email you when ready). You’ll have the option of clear or green as the final color.
By the end of the evening, you'll leave with a new skill, a great story, and one or two of your best handmade pieces on their way to becoming functional pottery you can use and enjoy at home.
What you'll make: Your own wheel-thrown pottery, including: (1) one or two pieces such as a cup or small bowl, (2) and finished, kiln-fired pottery to take home once fired.
What you'll learn:
How a pottery wheel works and basic wheel safety
Centering clay
Opening and pulling up walls
Shaping a cup or bowl
How the trimming, glazing and firing process works
Skill level: Beginner. No previous experience required.
Age restriction: 14+ years.
Who's this class for: Beginners, date nights, friends, teens, adults, and anyone curious to try the pottery wheel.
Food & drink policy: Non-alcoholic drinks are welcome as long as they are in a container with a lid. No food.
What to bring/ wear: All class materials and aprons will be provided. Wear comfortable clothes you don't mind getting muddy, and tie back long hair. Short fingernails make working with clay easier!
Please note: Finished pieces need time to dry, be trimmed and go through kiln firing, and will be ready for pickup about 3 weeks after class. This means they will not be ready by Christmas, so you’ll be able to keep your work and gift the experience of coming back to throw with your friends and family instead.
